It’s not quite at Interstellar level (with black holes and all that), but Google Glass is hitching a ride to the International Space Station next week.

A nonprofit called Kentucky Space is conducting a mission as part of a SpaceX launch on December 16 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission itself has to do with the regeneration of flatworms in the “microgravity environment” of outer space, analysis of molecular genetics and a lot of other science-y stuff that goes right over my head.

But that’s not all.

According to the news release (PDF), Kentucky Space is bringing Google Glass along for the ride and will be testing its use as part of the mission:

In addition, as part of this mission Kentucky Space will be testing Google Glass as an augmented reality tool in the preflight integration and post-flight operations. This is part of a process leading to the of utilization Google Glass as a human interface with KS technology and experiments on the ISS in 2015. In addition to Google, KS is working with Interapt, a Google at Work Certified Partner headquartered in Louisville, KY, on this novel project.

Pretty cool, huh? The mission will last until mid-January, Kentucky Space says.

Interapt is one of the Glass At Work partners that came on board in October. Among other Glass projects, Interapt has been working with Taco Bell and KFC to make Google Glass part of the employee training process.
