If you are a Google Glass Explorer, you’ve probably heard about the Glass foiling issue. It’s a known issue with Google Glass and even with the third iteration of Google Glass hardware, users still see their Glass foil without any apparent reason. Once the foiling starts, viewing the screen on Glass gets extremely difficult so the only option for you at that point is to contact a Glass guide and get your Google Glass replaced.

Up until recently, Google did not care exactly when you bought your Google Glass or if your Google Glass warranty was still valid when you asked to replace your foiled Glass unit.

A couple of weeks back, I was on a trip to India during which my Google Glass got foiled. Unfortunately, the foiling happened a day after my one-year anniversary with Google Glass, which also meant that my warranty expired. After my return back to the States, I contacted Google Glass support to get my Glass replaced knowing that this was a common issue and they would replace it. I provided all the information needed but then the Glass guide gave me a reply which I was not expecting. Here is the response from the Glass Guide:

Thanks for answering those questions for me. We’ve reached the point where we would normally go ahead and replace your Glass with a new one. However, it looks like your warranty has expired for your Glass. The last day was 11/30/2014 so we will not be able to replace yours.

Since Glass is still in beta and we all have plunked down a whopping $1500 to become an Explorer, I could not understand why Google would not replace my Google Glass for a known issue. I checked on Google+ and other Explorers also seemed suprised that Google would now look at warranty for replacing foiled Glass units. I emailed the guide right away to give me alternatives and the Guide then replied back that he would check with his team and get back to me. After a few hours, he came back with a reply that they would replace my Glass!

So what does all this mean? Is this a policy change on Google’s end for foiled Glass units? We reached out to Google about this but couldn’t get a clear reply from them. A spokesperson gave us this statement:

We’ve consistently been replacing devices this entire year. They’re replaceable until a 1 year warranty but if people ask we almost always make exceptions.

So fret not my friends. Your foiled Google Glass devices will probably be replaced by Google even after the warranty ends … but you might need to really ask for it. You can wear your Google Glass when you are out and about and don’t have to worry about it getting foiled.

Did you ever have to replace your Google Glass after warranty because it got foiled? Share your experience with us in the comments below.
