Google Glass came up briefly Thursday as Google revealed its Q4 2014 earnings, when Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette spoke briefly about the recent decision to close the Explorer program and stop selling the current version of Glass.

Pichette was telling analysts how Google decides where to invest its time and money — how some successful projects (he cited Google Fiber) get continuing investments when they reach certain milestones. He then went on to say that other projects that aren’t as successful might be asked to do a “reset,” and then the worst performing products and projects might get canceled altogether.

Glass is in the middle group — a project that didn’t reach its goals, but is still seen as having promise to Google.

In other cases, when the teams aren’t able to hit hurdles, but we think there’s still a lot of promise, we might ask them to take a pause and take the time to reset their strategy as we recently did in the case of Glass. And in those situations where a project [doesn’t] have the impact we hoped for, we do take the tough calls. We make the decision to cancel them, and you’ve seen us do this time and time again.

It’s been pretty rare for anyone so high up at Google to comment on Glass, so that’s interesting to hear what the corporate view is right now. Bottom line: Google sees Glass as something with “a lot of promise,” but the team needed to “reset their strategy.”

The audio from Google’s call is embedded below. Pichette’s comments quoted above happen at the 11:54 mark.
