Two Wichita State University professors have created a new access that expands the field of view of the built-in camera on Google Glass.

The device is called Google Lens, and it’s the work of Dr. Jibo He and Dr. Barbara Chaparro. If the name Jibo He sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the professor we spoke with in 2013/2014 while he was researching the safety of driving with Glass.

This new Glass accessory has nothing to do with driving, but could be beneficial for anyone that enjoys taking photos via Glass — especially healthcare professionals that rely on the camera but might find themselves frustrated with its limited field of view. From the WSU news release:

But the view users have with Google Glass has one drawback, He says. Its webcam has a narrow visual field of 54.8 degrees horizontally and 42.5 degrees vertically. The narrow field of view limits Google Glass’ usefulness for some applications.

Enter Google Lens, which expands the device’s view by 58 percent horizontally (to 109.8 degrees) and 34 percent vertically (to 57.8 degrees).

The lens inside the device “can be changed easily,” the university release says.

Google Lens isn’t for sale to the public; the university is hoping to license the technology and an accompanying app called “uSee Glass” that “allows users to remotely see through the camera of Google Glass.”
